THE IDIOT BOX (television) |
| Tivo |
|
Tivo has completely revolutionized my life. And when I say "life", I mean "sitting in front of the television drinking sodey-pop." And when I say "revolutionized", I mean "accelerated my spiraling descent into the yawning chasm of".
So let's try that again: Tivo has completely ruined my existence. And I LOVE it.

This is possibly the FUNNIEST show even to have been shown on TV. I'm specifically talking about the episodes
filmed when Phil Hartman was still alive. That show managed to be exceedingly zany without degenerating into
utter stupidity. Not many shows can boast THAT, my friend. No indeed. No, indeedy. Nope. Um, I guess I have nothing
more to say here. Just waitin' for the next item to come up. Yep. Yes indeed. And here it is:

Ren & Stimpy

It was the best (or alternately, the most odd) cartoon in existence in its day. And if not, it's certainly the first one of its genre. The new Adult Party version of R&S were also fun to watch, but maybe just a wee bit
over the top in its gross-to-funny ratio. Anyway, the current mainstay of gross-and-funny is:comes

South Park

It's the best (or alternately, the most sick) cartoon in existence. Okay, fine, well maybe not. But I like it, dag nabbit. Can't get enough of that crass swear word comedy. And that scatalogical humor is some funny sh*t, isn't it? South Park is brought to you by

Comedy Central

This channel single-handedly makes cable TV worthwhile despite all those Home-Shopping and Midget-Wrestling Channels. Another good channel is

The Cartoon Network

which is now great almost entirely because of Adult Swim, which is... well, cartoons for adults. And I don't mean PORN.
I mean INTELLIGENT AND MATURE HUMOR. No, I don't mean that either. It's probably closer to porn.

SCREECHING NOISES (music) |
|
They Might Be Giants
|
|
This is my favoritest bandest in the wholest universest. I like almost every musical thing they've done, and have bought as much of their stuff as I can without losing my dignity altogether. Really. This is still true.

The Dead Milkmen
|
|
Not the deceased dairy delivery dudes, but the music band. This is, or was, a GREAT punk band. What they lack in musical ability they make up for in knee-splitting side-slapping humor.

WASTE OF TEN DOLLARS (movies) |

The Hudsucker Proxy
|
|
This movie is possibly the greatest movie I have ever seen. I used to say that about Pulp Fiction, but now I say it about the Hudsucker Proxy. Because I want to make my site more suitable, you know, for kids.

This online comic was drawn by Jennifer Reitz. It’s… well, excellent. It’s a sci-fi manga strip… well, it’s more than that… Words fail Joe. Joe smash! It takes place in another universe known as Tryslmaistan, and the degree to which the universe and inhabitants are described is astounding. Physics, chemistry, biology, linguistics, mathematics… it’s all there. Me like good. Joe smash now. SMASH!

This online weekly newspaper is the only one you need for hard-hitting in-depth journalism. Unless you want facts. READ IT. TRY IT. YOU WILL LOVE IT. And if you don't, just remember the Onion's motto: TU STULTUS ES.

INKY THINGS REPLACED BY TV (books) |

Rudy Rucker
|
|
Rudy Rucker is probably my favorite author; he is both a mathematician and science fiction novelist, and he has written EXCELLENT books on both sides. I am completely in awe of the way this man thinks. Just a few of the science fiction masterpieces he's written: Software, Wetware, Freeware , White Light, The Hacker and the Ants. And as for his great math books for the interested layman (and slightly non-layman): Mind Tools, The Fourth Dimension, Geometry Relaitivity and the Fourth Dimension, and my favorite, Infinity and the Mind. Infinity is, as far as I'm concerned, the most interesting book ever written. It is basically my bible, and I have read it about fifteen times. If you like transfinite ordinals, you'll love Infinity and the Mind. Buy a copy now. Buy two! Buy Aleph One!

Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid
|
|
by Douglas R. Hofstadter. This book is all about strange loops, and full of excellently written dialogues which illustrate some of these loopy ideas. What's a strange loop? Well, imagine that you walked all the way around your house and when you got back to the front, your front door was upside-down. Or maybe you walk down your street, and keep walking straight until you find yourself in front of your house again. These are strange loops. Möbius strips, 90% of Escher paintings, and paradoxes are all strange loops. Read this book. Öne öther thing. This böök really lets me use the umlaut. I mean, where else dö yöu say Gödel and Möbius in the same paragraph?
